"We don't know where to start"

Recording family history feels overwhelming. What questions do you ask? When? How?

"Language & distance create barriers"

Families speak different languages. Time zones don't match. The awkwardness of "interviewing" grandparents feels weird.

"Context gets lost"

Photos capture moments, but without voice and story, the meaning fades within a generation.

Research-Backed Impact

Emory University Study

“Children who know more about their family's history show higher self-esteem and better emotional wellbeing.”

The 'Do You Know?' scale turned out to be the best single predictor of children's emotional health and happiness.

Why I Built This

Krishna Bisani

LinkedIn

I lost both my grandfathers before I could record their stories. By the time I wanted to know my grandmothers, really know them, they were gone.

Growing up in a multilingual immigrant family, I saw how distance and language keep families from sharing what matters. The awkwardness of "interviewing" grandparents. The time zones that never line up. The stories that slip away.

I built Smara because no family should lose their stories to time, distance, or language barriers. This isn't just about preserving the past. It's about staying present with the people who matter most.

Currently pursuing my M.S. in Computer Science at USC (B.S. 2024, M.S. expected Dec 2025), building Smara to ensure no one else loses their family's stories the way I did.
